Hiding Items and Categories

Not every item in your POS catalog needs a recipe. Gift cards, merchandise, service charges, and non-food items sit in your unlinked list permanently, dragging down your coverage percentage and cluttering the view. Hiding lets you clean this up.

Hiding individual items

To hide a single POS item:

  1. Find the item in the Item Mapper table.
  2. Click the hide button (eye-off icon) on the right side of the row.
  3. The item is immediately removed from the default view.

Hidden items are excluded from your coverage stats - your total count, unlinked count, and coverage percentage all update automatically.

Sync safe

When your POS catalog syncs, hidden items stay hidden. The sync only updates item details (name, price, category) - it never changes the hidden status.

Viewing and unhiding items

To see your hidden items:

  1. Look for the Show hidden button next to the search bar. It shows the count of hidden items (e.g. "Show hidden (12)").
  2. Click it to reveal hidden items in the table. They appear greyed out to distinguish them from active items.
  3. To unhide an item, click the unhide button (eye icon) on the hidden item's row.
  4. Click Hide hidden to return to the default view.

Hiding categories

If an entire POS category is irrelevant (e.g. "Retail" or "Gift Cards"), you can hide it along with all its items at once from the Recipe Category Management page.

How to hide a category with its POS items

  1. Navigate to CostingBrik > Recipes and click Manage Categories.
  2. Find the category you want to hide.
  3. Click the hide button (eye-off icon) in the Actions column.
  4. If the category has POS items linked to it, a confirmation dialog appears with two options:
    • Hide category only - hides the category from recipe dropdowns but leaves POS items visible in the Item Mapper.
    • Hide category + POS items - hides the category and also hides all POS items in that category from the Item Mapper.
  5. Choose your preferred option.

Unhiding a category

The same flow works in reverse:

  1. On the Category Management page, switch the view to All categories to see hidden ones.
  2. Click the unhide button (eye icon) on the hidden category.
  3. If the category has POS items, you will be asked whether to also unhide them in the Item Mapper.

Effect on category filter pills

When a category is hidden via Recipe Category Management, it also disappears from the category filter pills at the top of the Item Mapper page. This keeps the filter bar clean and focused on categories you are actively working with.

Unhiding the category brings the pill back.

What hiding affects

AreaEffect
Item Mapper tableHidden items removed from default view
Coverage statsHidden items excluded from totals and percentage
Category filter pillsHidden categories removed from filter bar
Recipe dropdownsHidden categories removed (via Category Management)
POS catalog syncNo effect - hidden items stay hidden
Existing recipe linksNo effect - linked recipes are preserved

Common use cases

Here are some items you might want to hide:

  • Gift cards and vouchers - no recipe needed
  • Merchandise (t-shirts, tote bags, branded mugs) - not food items
  • Service charges and tips - not menu items
  • Discontinued items - still in POS but no longer sold
  • Delivery fees - platform charges, not recipes
Start with categories

If you have a whole category of non-food items (e.g. "Retail"), hide it at the category level rather than hiding items one by one. This is faster and also hides any new items that get synced into that category in the future.

Permissions

Hiding and unhiding items requires edit access to CostingBrik. Viewers can see the Item Mapper but cannot hide or unhide items. The "Show hidden" toggle and hide/unhide buttons only appear for users with the appropriate role (owner, admin, or member).
