Allergens on the kiosk

The Brikly Kiosk app on the shared tablet at each site has an Allergens screen. It shows the allergen matrix for that site, so staff can answer a guest's allergen question at the counter, or turn the tablet round and let the guest read it.

Open it from Allergens in the side bar. Nobody needs to sign in. After 90 seconds without a touch, the tablet goes back to its home screen.

For pairing a tablet to a site, see Kiosk devices.

Needs the latest kiosk app

The screen described here needs the latest version of the Brikly Kiosk app. A tablet on an older version keeps the old screen, with chips such as Vegan or Dairy-free, until the app is updated. The Kiosk devices card in Settings > Locations shows which app version each tablet is running.

What it shows

The screen lists the menu for the site the tablet is paired to: recipes set to all sites, recipes assigned to that site, and manual menu items for that site. The data is the same as the web matrix, so the tablet, the web and the PDF always agree.

Each row shows the item's name, its category and a red pill for each allergen it contains. A recipe with a variation reads Name (Variation), for example "Toasted Teacake (No Butter)".

Add-ons and swaps from your till that have their own recipe (an oat milk swap, a syrup) sit in their own Add-ons and swaps section after the menu items. The count at the top lists them separately, for example "3 menu items, 1 add-on or swap". Removals such as "No cheese" are not listed, and an add-on with no recipe behind it does not appear.

Use the search box to find an item by name.

Allergens not fully known

When some of a recipe's ingredients have not been reviewed for allergens, or its allergens are still being worked out after a recent change, the row keeps the allergen pills that are known and adds an amber badge:

Allergens not fully known. Ask the kitchen.

The row has an amber border too. It never shows as having no allergens. To clear the badge, review the missing ingredients in CostingBrik (see Declaring allergens).

The filter chips

Under the search box are four chips:

  • All - every item.
  • No milk ingredients - items with no declared ingredient containing milk.
  • No gluten ingredients - items with no declared ingredient containing cereals containing gluten.
  • No nut ingredients - items with no declared ingredient containing tree nuts or peanuts.

The chips describe ingredients, not the finished dish. There is no Vegan chip, because allergen data cannot tell whether something contains meat, honey or gelatine.

With a chip on, a line reads "Items with allergens not fully known are left out of this list." An item whose allergens are not fully known is never listed under a chip. If nothing matches, the screen says "Nothing matches" and suggests trying another search or filter, or asking the kitchen.

The cross-contact caveat

Under the chips, the screen always shows:

Based on the allergens declared for each recipe's ingredients. Other allergens are handled in our kitchen, so cross-contact is possible. Please ask a member of staff if you have a severe allergy.

The same caveat is pinned to the bottom of the details drawer, so it stays on screen however long the list is.

The details drawer

Tap a row to open a drawer with the item's details. Tap another row to switch, or tap outside the drawer to close it.

For a recipe, the drawer lists each allergen with the ingredients it comes from, for example "From: whole milk, butter".

  • If the recipe's allergens are not fully known, an amber notice repeats "Allergens not fully known. Ask the kitchen." A Not yet reviewed list names each ingredient whose allergens have not been checked, with ingredients inside a sub-recipe named like "Pine nuts (in Pesto)".
  • If the row shows an allergen that the ingredient list does not account for, the drawer still shows it, under In this recipe or Also in this recipe, with "Ask the kitchen which ingredient this comes from." The drawer never lists fewer allergens than the row.
  • "No allergens are declared for this recipe's ingredients." only appears when nothing is unknown and the recipe has no allergens.
  • If the ingredients don't load, the drawer reads "Couldn't load the ingredients for this recipe. Tap to try again."

For a manual menu item, the drawer shows the allergens entered for it, with "Allergens entered by the business for this item." or "No allergens were entered for this item."

If recipes can't load

If the tablet cannot load your recipes, an amber banner reads:

We couldn't load the recipes, so this list may be incomplete. Ask a member of staff.

Tap the banner to try again. If nothing at all can be shown, the screen reads "No menu items to show" with a way to retry.
